The History of Hospital Food

Food within hospitals has for centuries played an important part in healing and recovery. Today, catering systems can be highly advanced mobile units which allow staff to prepare and feed patients right by their beds although this was not always the case.

In fact, however dubious the medical practices, in medieval Europe the value of was well understood by practitioners. Hospitals at this time were rarely operated by secular members of society and instead were the mainstay of the church, with many doctors doubling as clerics and many of the support staff being monks. It was these monks that usually prepared meals for patients.

In other parts of the world hospital food also played an important role, in some Islamic countries chroniclers speak of food which would have been suitable for nobles and kings. Many historians have argued that the high quality of care in the secular hospitals that were built in urban areas were a considerable achievement with medieval Islamic society.

Within Europe in later centuries the function of hospitals and those offering the care also changed. This was particularly the case in the eighteenth and nineteenth century where the monastery hospitals began to be replaced by more professional hospitals run by the military. Once again hospital food remained and important element within the recovery process although most hospital diets consisted of bread, beef and beer, although the serving of alcohol did diminish in the latter stages of this period.

Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries a greater understanding of the role that food played in healing was gained. Termed nutritional science hospitals now comprehended that there was a direct correlation between the food given to a patient and healing times and meals had to be carefully planned to ensure patients received all of the nutrients they needed.

Today hospital food is as important as ever although tight budgetary restraints and pressures on staff mean that hospitals are now looking for evermore advanced and efficient methods of food preparation which do not sacrifice taste, presentation or nutritional value.

Why Acidic Foods Are Bad For Your Health

It is stated a medical fact that all diseases thrive in environments characterized by high levels of acidity. If we want to lead a healthy life, it is imperative for us limit our intake of acidic foods. I ignoring this comes at a high price

Foods rich in acid may cause diseases like obesity, osteoporosis, flu, skin disorders, and even cancer. High acidity also results in cramps, spasms, headaches, joint and muscle pains, and fatigue. Eating too much acidic food and not enough alkaline food can also result to insomnia, stomach ulcers, water retention, and constipation.

Also, besides weakening the immune system, indulging in acidic foods can bring forth a decrease in strength and stamina, slow mental reaction, and ineffective digestion.

Acid foods per se can post a threat to our health, but the ubiquity of these foods even furthers the damage. You see, these foods are almost always splattered in peoples daily menus: from breakfast staples like white rice, eggs, cheese, milk, coffee to main courses like pasta, beef, pork, chicken, turkey, to light meals composed of chocolates and peanuts, beer and soft drinksand the list stretches longer than canteen tables! Foods that are rich in phosphorus, sulphur, and chlorine are not spared from the list since these elements are acid-forming.

So how do we steer clear of acidic foods? While it may seem impossible to escape these usual hunger-solvers, there is still a way to counteract their harmful effects on our health. The so-called alkaline diet, which is designed to neutralize the outcomes of acidic food ingestion through consumption of alkaline-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, and other low-sugar foods, is a viable option. An alkaline diet can help restore the balance between acidity and alkalinity. According to Robert Young, who is a prime promoter of alkaline diet and alternative medicine, it is ideal for the body to have a diet that constitutes an intake of 70-80% alkaline foods and 20-30% acid foods.

So what it all boils down to is moderation. Acidic foods are not all bad for our health. In fact, they are an integral part of the balance Young is pointing out. It is even said that a little amount of acidthe right typecan help lower our blood glucose levels. Acetic acid, which is the chief acid in vinegar, can significantly reduce the glycemic index of a starchy meal.

Three Factors To Consider While Organizing A Food Festival

Are you a restaurateur? Remember, organizing a food festival is an effective strategy you can take to attract customers or foodies to your business. While on one hand you can offer them food prepared by the finest chefs of your restaurant, make them appreciate the quality, and make them your customers; on the other, you can extend your business and make a large number of customers both in your city and from other cities. If you can promote and popularize the event through advertisements and various promotional activities, you may be able to attract international tourists to your festival. So, you can see that a properly organized and planned food festival can really boost up your business and help you to make a large amount of profit. However, before organizing a festival, there are three most important factors that you must consider. A list of those three factors is given below:

Theme: Before you make any plan, the foremost thing is to decide the theme for the festival. The theme for the occasion can be Thai, Chinese, Indian, or Tibetan. Whatever be the theme you choose, you need to make arrangements for dishes accordingly. In addition to that, you need to decorate you eatery to match with the theme of the festival. You should check whether the props, the decorations, and the ambience are perfectly suited to the theme of the festival.

Menu: Generally, the restaurants adopt the food culture of particular regions of the world as their themes for such festivals. However, you must remember that there can be more than one staple dish of a region. That is the reason, you need to research well and finalize a menu for the event. While deciding on the dishes, you must make it a point to check whether those are popular and yet unique choices for such an event.

Budget: You need to consider your budget before planning such an event. According to your budget, you can organize such an event either in your restaurant or in a club or in a banquet. The number of dishes in the menu card also determines the cost of organizing such a program. In addition to that, you must calculate your finances well and make sure that you are getting a profitable return on investment from the festival.

If you need help or assistance to organize, promote, and manage a food festival, you can always opt for the services of an online event management service provider.
