To most, it would certainly seem that Chinese food must be healthier than the typical “fast food” diet. While usually healthier than typical burgers and fries, a closer look shows that Chinese take out in America is typically not as healthy as the food found on the tables of the average Chinese family.

There are a couple of main reasons for this.

Chinese food in our American restaurants often has considerably more meat, often red meat, and is served in much bigger portion sizes here, than in China.
The food on the table of families in China would be found to have a much larger portion of vegetables than of meat. In fact, until the modernization of the past century, particularly in rural areas, meat would only have been consumed occasionally. However, some studies are beginning to show that modernization has brought with it in China, a higher consumption of meats and fats and so, an increase in certain conditions associated with overeating meat and/or fat.

Food is also served differently in China which causes it to be a healthier dish. This difference has to do with portion size. The meals we order for take out at our local Chinese restaurant and take home to consume in a single serving are the size of shared main courses in China. Chinese food of this size would normally have been the shared dishes in the center of a communal table if served traditionally.
In China, each person at the table is given their own serving of rice or noodles but the main dishes, consisting mainly of bite sized vegetables and some meat, would be placed in the middle of the table and shared by all. In fact, each person at the table would have eaten straight from the serving dishes since they do not share our habit of obtaining personal portions of main dishes from the serving dishes and putting them on individual plates.

Understandably, some Americans do not consider this part of the traditional Chinese food ‘habit’ to be healthier, as all persons at the table would be placing used chopsticks into shared or communal containers of the main dishes. However, it could be argued that the benefits of healthier habits such as eating less meat and smaller portions far outweigh the risks of perhaps passing germs through placing used chopsticks into a communal dish. In any case, even “American-style” Chinese food is a healthier option than burgers and fries.

1 – 2 cups of berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries)
1 scoop of whey protein powder, unflavored

Peaches and Cream:
8 oz. of skim milk
1 cup of sliced peaches
1 tsp vanilla extract
Half of a cup of vanilla yogurt, sugar free
Splash of orange juice
1 scoop of protein powder, unflavored

Pina Colada:
8 oz. skim milk
Half of a cup of pineapple chunks
1 tbsp coconut extract, or cup coconut milk
1 scoop of whey protein powder, unflavored

Chocolate Raspberry:
8 oz. skim milk
1 cup of raspberries
2 tsp cocoa powder
1 scoop of whey protein powder, unflavored or chocolate flavored
Optional: 1 tbsp peanut butter

When making any of these protein shakes, be sure to add the liquid first into the blender and then the other ingredients on top to ensure proper and consistent blending.

Make sure to have your protein shake immediately after your workout and no longer than 45 minutes after your final set. It is important to get the protein into your body as soon as possible because there is a small window of opportunity for roughly 45 minutes after you finished your last set which helps and maximizes recovery time.

Ingredient for Morcon:

2 kg of beef sirloin, cut thinly and widely 2-3 tbsp calamansi juice Soy sauce kg Ham 1 cup grated cheese cup of prunes Pickles cup of Bacon Sausage, cut into strips cup cornstarch Flour 1 carrot, cut into strips 1 pack tomato sauce tsp peppercorn 1 pc Beef bouillon Hardboiled egg

Morcon Recipe Procedure for Cooking:

Wash sliced beef thoroughly, put in strainer and drain excess water. In a bowl, marinate slice beef with a mixture of calamansi and soy sauce for 5-10 hours. Lay flat beef slice on a platter, lay in a piece of ham, bacon, carrots, sausage bacon, pickle, prunes, grated cheese evenly. Roll beef and make sure that the mixture stays inside, secure filling by tying using thread. Roll beef roll from corn starch, fry until it turns into golden brown, set aside. After frying beef rolls, bring to boil meat with 1 liter of water, beef bouillon, cup of soy sauce, ground peppercorn, and vetsin using pressure. When beef tenderize add cup of tomato sauce, bay leaf and simmer for five minute. Remove meat roll into pressure cooker to cool, add Reno liver spread at the sauce to thicken and for extra flavor.

Preparation for Morcon:

Sliced beef and place some in clean big platter, pour thickened sauce at the top. This awesome recipe is perfect with steam white rice or as a sandwich filling. Served while it is hot, enjoy and share.
